This is an inspiring speech about what you can do with the gifts you've been given to break others from the fear that binds people and communities everyday. Damon Davis is a well respected artist who used his artwork to rise the morale and spread awareness for Michael Brown's death in Ferguson. He took photos of the protesters hangs and put them on boarded up buildings all of Ferguson, he painted murals and scattered his art work all throughout this shattered city. He used his creativity and courage to share an important message with the world, which is what his speech is all about. Davis uses pathos by talking about how fear is contagious. He talks about the fear brought about by the police after Browns death and this makes his audience feel this fear ( like he said; fear is contagious) and empathize with his story about this tragic day. He engages his audience by talking about current events and things that are very controversial and tie in well to him main points. This connects to both the American dream and the global dream because community is a very important part of both. The world as a whole wants to feel unified whether we actually are or not. Davis feeds off of this dream by telling us that "When I got out there,I found something surprising.I found anger; there was a lot of that. But what I found more of was love.People with love for themselves.Love for their community. And it was beautiful" (Davis 2:17) This relates to Barack Obama's speech at 2004 Keynote Address to the Democratic National Convention because he continuously talks about nationalism and how opportunities are everything. And Davis is saying that if you have the opportunity to be courageous that you should take it. Although I enjoyed this speech I didn't agree with everything in it such as fearing the police. I learned that 2 different groups can see the same thing very differently. However, I liked the message behind it about courage. I would recommend this ted talk for discouraged communities.
